A 1/2 bass generally suits a player of about 11 to 14 years old, which is usually a height of 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 7 in. Sizing follows the player's height and reach rather than age alone, so measure before choosing.
Upright bass sizes run, smallest to largest: 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 — 3/4 is the standard full size for an upright bass.
