Each year Kanile'a and founder Joe Souza push the limits on what an ukulele can be. For 2020, Joe decided to do something special with the super tenor creating was can only be called the 2020 Limited Edition Platinum.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Joe, several times, at the NAMM Show 2020 held in January at the Anaheim, CA convention center. I think it was on the last day when I was standing over by the Kamaka booth and Joe came up and started talking to me.
Although we talked about many things, like life, koa trees, ukuleles and he went in depth with me about the 2020 Platinum Limited Edition.
I talk about this in the video you see here on the page, but a few of the highlights include the Mastergrade Solid Koa Top, Back, and Sides, Kolohaha armrest and bevel, Platinum Crown Slotted Headstock, and Gotoh Stealth Cosmo Black Tuners with Kanile`a Knobs.
But the most remarkable thing is that the inlay that is in the body, the neck, and the headstock is beach sand. If you look at it, it seems like it might be some kind of light wood like maple, but not it's actually beach sand. HOW COOL!!!
Plue the motif that starts on the body and then does into the neck represents the entire Souza family and also the long tradition of Hawaiian culture, family, love, and ukulele.
In 2019, Kanile'a only made 69 of the 2019 Platinum Limited Edition Pineapples. I actually also have #69, the last one made which I named after Jimi Hendrix, "The Experience." Please click here to see it.
I imagine they will make even less of the 2020 Limited Edition Platinum so own a piece of history and a truly masterpiece of an instrument that will not only put a smile on your face everytime you play it but will attract immediate attention from anyone that sees it.

Since before Kanile’a was founded, Joe was innovating and creating new and sometimes outrageous designs. His first ‘ukulele was a Concert body with a Tenor neck, now known as a Super-Concert or Long-Neck Concert. Other designs that were pushing the boundaries have made an impact in the ‘ukulele world, like the Guitarlele, Super-Tenor, and the 19″ Tenor scale length. Having grown up as an `ukulele player Joe understood what might work, and what wouldn’t, from a player’s perspective. It took years to perfect the craft of playing as well as building. Musicianship was taught to Joe by his late mother and his late Aunt starting when he was in the 4th grade. His training as a luthier began with the late, “Uncle” Peter Bermudez in 1991. Though gone, his teachings will never be forgotten. Now his 3 sons, Kaimana, Iokepa, and Kahiau are actively learning and absorbing the knowledge that has been passed down through many generations.
